There’s a lot going on right now isn’t there? Covid-19 (coronavirus) has been taking over the headlines for the last few weeks and many of us are being told to self isolate and distance ourselves from social situations when possible.
For more and more of us this might mean working from home. As a locum pharmacist, working from home is unlikely to be a possibility for you, however it’s important that you listen to government guidelines at this time and taken the appropriate actions where necessary.
So what can locum pharmacists do when self isolating or social distancing?
If you cannot take on locum work at the moment, now would be the perfect time to get stuck into your life admin. All those little jobs you’re been putting off for months? Get them done.
Below is a list of things you can do that your future self will thank you for once you can return back to locum work.
Update your DBS check
As a locum pharmacist working in the UK you will likely need an up to date enhanced DBS check. For most companies this will mean your DBS check should be less than a year old or on the update service.
If your DBS check is over a year old, now is the time to apply for a new check so you have it ready for when you return to work. You can apply for an Enhanced DBS check through Team Locum by clicking here.
Once you receive your new DBS check we always recommend putting it on the update service so it stays up to date and relevant. The update service costs £13 each year but is a worthwhile investment in our opinion as is means you won’t need to apply for a new check every year.
Ensure that you have the necessary CPPE accreditations
There are a number of accreditations you will need before you can register with locum agencies or undertake locum work. Whilst you are social distancing you might as well take the time to ensure you have the following accreditations, and check they are still in date.
- Summary Care Records – You can complete this assessment in roughly 2 hours on the CPPS website.
- Safeguarding Level 2 – This accreditation expires every two years so it’s worth checking if you do need to update this. If you do need to update the accreditation, you can complete it on the CPPE website.
The following accreditations are also recommended
It’s not a CPPE accreditation but some companies like their locum pharmacists to be Dementia Friends. You can become a Dementia Friend by simple registering and watching a video. It doesn’t take long at all and as you might find yourself with time on your hands whilst self isolating in the coming weeks, it’s probably worthwhile.
Check you can provide the CPCS service
More and more pharmacies are signing up to provide the CPCS (Community Pharmacist Consultation Service). This means that you, as a locum pharmacist should make sure you can provide the service once your self isolation period is over.
As a pharmacist you should already have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide the service, however if you are unsure you can complete the self-assessment form to check if you have any gaps.
Update your availability
We know things are a little up in the air at the moment (to say the least) but if you know you will be self isolating for a certain amount of time, it would be worth updating you availability on your Team Locum profile. This way our bookings team will know you won’t be available for work during this period.
Check if you qualify for government support
New government support is being put in place to help self employed people (including many locum pharmacists) through the Coronavirus outbreak. According to the .gov website “Those who are not eligible for SSP, for example the self-employed or people earning below the Lower Earnings Limit of £118 per week, can now more easily make a claim for Universal Credit or Contributory Employment and Support Allowance”.
It may be worth checking to see if you quality for government support whilst you are self isolating or social distancing due to Covid-19.
Don’t forget, once you’ve completed new accreditations or DBS checks you should always let Team Locum know so that your profile can be updated accordingly. You wouldn’t want to do all that hard work for nothing now would you?
You can update your accreditations yourself by logging into your Team Locum account or you can email them over to us at [email protected] and we will upload them for you.
And once you’ve done all the boring but necessary life admin you can go ahead and binge watch that series you’ve been looking forward too, after all what is a bit of social distancing without a good boxset binge?
Not part of the dream team yet? Why not register with Team Locum?
We can put your account together whilst you are self isolating so that you are ready to take locum work with us once your period of social distancing is complete!
